Perhaps no other artist in the history of rock music has produced so many distinguished works in so many different styles and over so many years as Neil Young. The various aspects of Young's career (the bucolic folk-singer, the liberal militant, the post-hippie moralist, the apocalyptic guru, the universal pessimist, the melancholy loner, the alienated rocker) are merely stages of a long cavalry, which is both individual and collective.

History of Rock Music - 1966-1969

In more than thirty-years as a recording artist, Neil Young has experienced as many extreme low points of critical and commercial success as he has high but, without a doubt, he is one of the most important rock composers and performers North America can claim. His signature raw nasal tone, shrill guitar playing, highly personal lyric-writing, and hippie-cowboy loner stance have helped shape rock and roll as it has advanced from adolescence into maturity. Through his experimentation with every genre, from folk to heavy metal to rockabilly to techno, Young has created a sound and feel uniquely his own.

"Besides all of the above, I really dig his music."

Unlike normal cover bands, tribute bands are musical groups or single performers dedicated to performing the music of one particular group, usually a very famous one. Sometimes, the band so honored is no longer performing, but some are still on the road.

One band that has spawned dozens of tribute bands is the Beatles. With the Broadway musical Beatlemania and other shows like 1964. Imitating the Beatles is big business, but is also inspired by a love affair with the music. Some Beatles tribute bands just sing the songs. Other bands use wigs and make-up to create the illusion of the original Fab Four and hire members based on how much they sound like John, Paul, George or Ringo. Being able to keep up with the Beatles as a musician is also very important in most Beatles tribute bands.

Another popular tribute band pays homage to the 1970s rock band KISS. These guys dress up as the original members, theatrical make-up and all, and rock out to "Dr. Love" and "Firehouse" while spitting fire from the stage in best Gene Simmons fashion.

Other tribute bands traveling somewhere include Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Black Sabbath, Jimmy Buffett, the Who, Fleetwood Mac, the Monkees, Elvis Presley and even the Osmond Brothers!

Jeff Taylor is no different. His love for Neil Young music has inspired him to perform a ton of Neil Young songs from 1966 to present day. The only difference between Jeff and other tribute bands is the fact that Jeff Taylor is not a band at all. Instead, Jeff shows his homage to Neil Young by performing solo with acoustic guitars, piano and harmonicas much in the same way as an unplugged concert of Neil himself.

Long gone are the days when tribute bands were seen as "cheap copies" cashing in on the success of the original. These days they're highly professional outfits that spend their spare time studying their chosen performer and rehearsing to get every sound as close to the original as possible.

Contrary to popular belief, not all tribute bands are so-called "look-a-like" bands. Although there are bands that have worked hard to closely resemble the performers they're copying, there are also those who are more concerned with maintaining the spirit of the music rather than looking like their chosen artist. With that in mind, don't be surprised if you go along to your local music club to see a tribute band only to find that they look nothing like the original.
